Thunderbird Country Club

More Communities…

The Thunderbird Country Club in Rancho Mirage is one of the top golf courses in the Palm Springs are. Since its establishment in 1951, this place has hosted many celebrities, and now the golf course is known for its incredible history. In 1954, Thunderbird Country Club became the birthplace of the electric golf cart, which was specifically invented for the members of this community.

Even from the beginning, millionaires and celebrities have spent their time here, as this is a place where only the elites can afford to stay. A home can be purchased in the area for sums between 1 million and 7.5 million dollars. These are some of the people who have enjoyed the place: Frank Sinatra, Ginger Rogers, Bob Hope, President Ford, President Nixon and President Eisenhower.

Everything started in the year 1945, when developer Frank Bogert has this plan for a 750 acres area to be a dude ranch. But, the house selling business didn’t work and golfers recommended Frank to transform the area into a golf course. Celebrities from Hollywood became part of the golf community over the years. The Ford Motor Company took the logo of the club and used it for one of their sports cars, just because the company liked this logo very much. The club is the birthplace for the Bob Hope Desert Classic golf tournament. The first individuals who bought homes in the area were Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.

Over the years, the golf course started to be less popular and became worn down eventually, after its richest members started to choose other locations for their activities. These individuals have chosen places that were fancier, so there was an urgent need for a redesign of the course. For making the new model, Altervers and Associates Architects were responsible. The idea was to take the old model and improve it, but to keep its original charm and appeal. A new design was made by Robert J. Altevers, maintaining the things that represented the history of the club and adding all the necessary modern amenities.

A casual California ranch style was used, with more modern and dramatic accents. In this way, the old club became a complex, modern and elegant country club, for the purpose of providing entertainment to members for many more years. Today, the Thunderbird Country Club’s new design still offers a unique ambiance that can be suitable for all the Rancho Mirage inhabitants and for the members of the club.

Altervers says that the club works so well because of the people that visit it and the relationships that have been established between them over the years. It seems that the idea to not change the original atmosphere was great and that the modern additions have been just the beneficial things that have kept the club fancy and modern. The club was in fact only updated to keep up with the competition.

As being a part of the Coachella Valley, the Thunderbird Country Club also includes the Annenberg Estate, a popular landmark in the area. This estate occupies 205 acres of land and it hides behind a pink wall, chain-link fencing and lush landscapes.

Annenberg Estate has many visitors who are interested about the amazing history of the place and the majestic establishment. People who run the estate take advantage of the popularity of the place and they make a lot of money from this. A new Education Center is about to be constructed near the estate and it will be connected to the property. Public tours will be scheduled through this center. In order to avoid any possible issues, the tours will be guided.

An 18-hole golf course is part of the property, along with a dozen of lakes made by the hand of man and a mid-century modern home. In the past, the home was the largest of Riverside County. Today, there are larger houses than this one. People who are interested in buying real estate in the Thunderbird Country Club area can contact us whenever they want.
